Substance Misuse And Offending

New Module

25th & 26th February 2008

New Module

This two-day course is designed for people working with substance misusers, either in a specialist agency or in a support agency dealing with substance misusers. The course will build upon the personal skills and knowledge that you are already using in your work, as well as enhance those skills and increase your knowledge base of criminal justice issues to help you in your working practice.

The module has been designed to meet the needs of a wide range of practitioners who work with clients with drug and/or alcohol problems. It is especially suitable for those working with services such as Drug Treatment & Testing Services and in Prison Liaison posts. The trainers will tailor the day to suit all needs within the multi-disciplinary setting.

Learning Objectives –

  • Test and enhance existing knowledge of legal aspects of drug use
  • Explore the links between offending and drug/alcohol use
  • Consider the impact of personal values and societal attitudes towards offending behaviour
  • Consider effectiveness literature and the “what works” principles
  • Examine strategies and interventions to address criminal justice issues when working in a drugs/alcohol environment

Throughout this course, attitudes, beliefs and personal values will be explored in order to break down communication barriers allowing the transference of existing personal skills, which can be applied to offending behaviour.

The course provides underpinning knowledge for the acquisition of SVQ Skill Sets [Level 3] based on the Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards [DANOS] competencies.
